Project overview

This family of five was looking for a home to buy on the lower north shore. Their search found nothing contemporary that suited them, however there were plenty of older homes available, so they decided to buy one on a nice size block, and undertake a knock down rebuild with Allura.

With three young boys, our client wanted a custom home design that was functional for a family with young, energetic children.

They wanted to capture as much natural light as possible, and create areas for the kids to play inside and out. It was also important to have a large study for the parents who work from home regularly.

Within the open plan living and kitchen area Allura incorporated a large, custom built skylight and glass floor to ceiling doors leading to the long alfresco area. Large windows were installed upstairs and downstairs to allow lots of daylight into the home, which helps with energy management.

An activity room upstairs, landscaped gardens and pool were incorporated into the custom home design to provide entertainment for the kids, and a laundry with side access includes a shower for quick rinsing after using the pool.

There are four bedrooms and three bathrooms upstairs. Two bedrooms are connected by a Jack and Jill bathroom. The master bedroom has an ensuite with large shower and double bowl vanity, as well as an enclosed balcony for the parents to retreat and enjoy the northern sun.

“Wow, wow! Honestly we could not be more excited, our new home is amazing. After looking around for so long for the perfect home, that did not exist, we decided to buy an old home and then knock it down and build a new custom home. The result is a wonderful home that suits our family and our super busy lifestyle."

Project overview

Our clients were looking to relocate from the Hills district to Sydney’s north shore. They found an existing property on a sloping block in West Pymble, specifically to knock down and build a large, contemporary family home.

Allura worked very closely with the client to design a custom home for this family of four, that worked on the sloping block, maximised the natural sunlight into the home and also for solar power generation, and provided opportunities for everyone to enjoy the stunning bush landscape that the property backed on to.

There was a pool already on the block, which was renovated by Allura. A large deck was included in the custom home design, and a spa installed at the beginning of the project. Two rainwater tanks were also dug into the backyard and hidden by the deck.

Allura designed a stepped house, from front to back, to accommodate the slope of the land. The client also specifically requested that the roof not be visible from the street. To meet this requirement, Allura designed a parapet to hide the roofing materials, while providing an modern finish to the home.

Visitors are greeted by a large, bespoke front door which opens in to a wide entrance displaying an open staircase leading upstairs.

As you wander through the home a large barn door reveals a home theater, and a central, open gas fire place is a decorative highlight in the living area, providing a sense of cosy comfort on winter days and nights. The natural stone floor down stairs also has underfloor heating.

Large glass stacker doors open from the living area out to the alfresco area, which runs the length of the home and includes an inbuilt pizza oven and barbecue.

An entertainer’s kitchen walks into a butler’s pantry and laundry.

In this home the three main bedrooms upstairs overlook the bush setting and pool. The two teenage daughters each have a walk-in robe, share a bathroom and study / living area which includes bespoke built-in joinery to work at.

The master bedroom also features a walk-in robe and ensuite, with striking, oversized tiles. All bathrooms also have underfloor heating.

Overnight guests have a separate bedroom and ensuite at the front of the house.

This contemporary home is finished with large windows, to drawer in natural light and assist with energy management, and a large deck surrounding the pool and spa.

Allura also designed and delivered all retaining walls and landscaping.

Project overview

The 1920’s layout of this art deco, north shore property didn’t suit this family’s 21st century lifestyle. Before meeting Allura, the owners engaged an architect to redesign their existing home. During the process of sourcing quotes to renovate they contacted Allura, and following detailed consultation realised a renovation would have limitations. When renovating there are often structural changes that can’t be made, and old services such as sewer, water and electrical which are not generally replaced.

Allura presented the option of a knock down rebuild, and concluded it would be $150,000 cheaper than the renovation (including landscaping, driveway, new pipework).

Allura designed this family of five the ultimate custom home; a design without compromise. This was achieved through our collaborative approach to design, as well as a visit to Allura’s Lifesize Plans facility. Here the client was able to virtually walk through a digitally displayed lifesize floorplan of their home and make modifications in real time to ensure rooms were the right size, the layout was functional and the end result was exactly what they wanted.

The ground floor layout now includes formal entertaining areas for special occasions, as well as everyday open plan living areas and a kid’s zone; a striking full-length alfresco area; guest accommodation with ensuite and courtyard that captures the eastern sun; a dedicated study/home office; and large cloak room for school bags, sports gear and musical instruments to help manage the clutter of a large family.

A double garage features extra storage and work area, and Allura also installed a steel beam and hook for a boxing bag to hang from.

“We realise now, building a new custom design home with Allura was a much better outcome than a renovation, we could not be happier! It’s now the perfect family home.”

Duplex - Project overview

Our clients bought this property specifically for development. As a corner block, it provided a genuine custom built home opportunity. The decision to knock down and rebuild a duplex delivered the client with an exceptional outcome.

While their existing architectural plans were going through the DA approval process, they came to Allura seeking a custom home builder who could execute the project to a budget and maximise the return. The client was also looking for a total solutions specialist, a builder who could deliver attention to detail and exceptional interior design advice.

Allura ticked all the boxes. While Allura didn’t design the homes we could definitely deliver an outstanding finish. The clients were impressed with Studio Allura and the interior design service we offer, as they wanted to created two unique homes with exterior and interior finishes that were on trend and what buyers were looking for.

Each duplex was the same size, however they featured individual interior layouts to appeal to different buyers. This was intentional; to provide the future owner with confidence they had purchased a home unique to them, and not a ‘cookie cutter’ of their neighbour’s home.

The goal was to create two individual properties that would perform well in the market place.

Project overview

After living in their single storey, three-bedroom home in Croydon for 14 years, our clients were ready for an upgrade. With family in the area, they didn’t want to relocate, however spent nearly two years unsuccessfully looking for a suitable home to buy. They decided to knock down and rebuild. Initially they investigated a volume builder, however the client realised after the house was built, they would be personally responsible for organising the landscaping, pool build, driveway and fencing. Research to find a builder who would manage the entire project led them to Allura. Our clients loved the total solution we offer and together we designed the custom home they’d always wanted.

The build was on a narrow block on a busy main road, which can present some challenges, however with a dedicated site manager on the job for around two hours each day, the logistics were easy to manage for Allura.

The materials selected for the home’s exterior ensured the new home was in keeping with the architectural style of the area.

Several key design elements were required to enhance the family’s lifestyle, including a separate food preparation area as they entertained regularly however wanted to keep clutter out of the kitchen; a large toy walk-in-toy cupboard for their daughter; and a massive walk-in-robe off the master bedroom.

Alllura also recommended practical touches for these areas such as sensor lights in the butler’s pantry/laundry which activate when movement is dedicated and hands are full of plates or laundry, and a skylight in the walk-in-robe so the entire wall area could be utilised.

The alfresco area folding glass doors were designed with an invisible corner so that when opened the entertaining area doubles in size for seamless indoor/outdoor configuration.

Allura not only demolished and built a custom home, we also installed the driveway, boundary fencing, pool and landscaping.

Project overview

The original home on this battle axe block was bought with the intention to renovate or undertake a knock down rebuild.

Our clients really wanted to capture the natural light, while also creating a new custom home design that suited their sociable lifestyle. They had plans from another builder that proposed a slightly bigger home, without any significant changes to the floorplan or orientation.

Allura recommended flipping the home so all the living area was upstairs, and turning it around to capture as much of the northern sun as possible.

Allura designed an inverted, traditional two storey home. The block has a 45-degree incline and is surrounded by trees. Construction of retaining walls was critical to create a building platform.

Downstairs includes a double garage, laundry, built-in storage under the staircase, a separate bathroom, two bedrooms (which will be used as a study and guest room) and a large rumpus room.

At the top of the stairs, an angled wall naturally directs everyone into the sun-drenched, open plan living area, kitchen, dining space and extensive outdoor deck.

Designed with a servery to one section of the outdoor deck, the kitchen features a large island bench, walk in pantry and custom-designed wine rack. Bi-fold doors open on to the vast deck.

Three bedrooms upstairs are cleverly hidden behind the angled wall. The spacious master bedroom includes a his and hers walk in robe, and luxurious ensuite

Bedrooms two and three also feature built-in robesThis area of the home, which includes a bathroom and walk-in linen cupboard, has skylight to bring in natural light to this space.

By designing a home that maximises the extremes of this block and the orientation, Allura was able to create a home that met our client’s expectations, and a home we’re proud to have delivered.

Blocks in Sydney’s inner west are generally narrow; however home design doesn’t need to compromise, it just needs to take advantage of the land available.

Our client built this home as an investment property. A big home to appeal to large families, or those with a parent living with them, the custom home design takes this style of living into consideration.

A long narrow home often limits the amount of natural light coming inside, so this design included a large skylight and windows above the staircase void to provide as much daylight as possible to the lower level.

At the front of the house is a single garage and study. As you walk along the hallway you pass a rumpus room for kids, which can double as a guest bedroom. The downstairs bathroom is larger than most second bathrooms, to provide a comfortable space for a parent or long-term guest.

Opposite the rumpus room is the striking open stringer staircase. This minimalist design lets the natural light from the western afternoon sun filter through the entire home.

The back half of the house is a big open plan living, dining and kitchen space, with a 4.2m long entertainers island bench with a 40mm stone benchtop and waterfall end. A neutral colour palette includes eye catching featuresa herringbone tile splash back, contrasting joinery and feature pendant light fittings that match the scale of the island bench.

A large laundry runs off the kitchen out to a small courtyard where washing can dry in the western sun.

Upstairs are five generous bedrooms, all with built-in robes. The master bedroom and ensuite face north, with the walk-in robe positioned closer to the bedroom entrance.
